KUPPET – TSC Talks On Compensation of Acting Administrators Fails
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) lobbied the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) about the high number of teachers who act in administrative positions without compensation.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) Circulars, according to TSC, abolished acting positions, making them non-compensable, so the parties were unable to agree on how to compensate teachers for acting appointments.
KUPPET claimed that the teacher’s employer was breaking the law by employing acting administrators without compensating them, and stated that the union’s legal team would consider filing a formal demand to have the court rule on compensation for acting appointments.
Last week, Omboko Milemba, the national chairman of KUPPET, announced that the upcoming fiscal year will see the promotion of 30,000 of the 50,000 teachers who had been stagnant for years.
OmbOmboko expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of promotions for the majority of instructors since 2017, and the Naivasha meeting pledged to change this starting in June.
He stated that Sh4 billion would be required to hire 20,000 instructors, who would help address the JSS situation across the country.
