Last Moments of 14-Year-Old Grade 7 Girl Mauled by Lioness in Kajiado.
The village of Emakoko in Kajiado County has been left in fear and disbelief after a lioness fatally attacked a 14-year-old girl, leaving the community shaken and demanding answers. The incident has brought renewed attention to the escalating human-wildlife conflict in areas bordering Nairobi National Park.
Kennedy Kigen, the father of the victim, Peace Mwendwa, recounted the heartbreaking moments leading up to the attack. He stated that his three children were inside their house within the homestead when the lioness jumped over their makeshift fence and entered the dwelling.
He heard screams from the compound and rushed over, only to witness the lioness dragging his daughter away. Despite their attempts, the family was unable to rescue her. Kigen pleaded for action, emphasizing the tragic loss of his child and the need for immediate intervention.
Charles Romo, the village elder, supported the father’s account. He explained that the lioness entered the homestead around 7pm and found the children in the house. According to him, the animal captured one of them and dragged her toward the river. The villagers spent the entire night in search, only to find the girl’s lifeless body, which had been consumed by nearly 80 percent.
The Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) confirmed on Sunday that the incident took place on a ranch bordering the southern edge of Nairobi National Park. The lioness reportedly accessed a residential compound within Savannah Ranch and mauled the girl in the surrounding savannah area.
KWS stated that the full details were still under investigation. Efforts by emergency teams and KWS rangers led them to the Mbagathi River after they followed blood trails, where the body was recovered with injuries to the lower back. The lioness was not located at the scene.
Victim Identified as Local Student
The victim was identified as a Grade 7 pupil at a nearby primary school. Her body was taken to the Nairobi Funeral Home for a postmortem examination. The tragic incident has intensified the urgency to address the rising conflict between wildlife and residents in neighboring communities.
Residents have responded by calling on the government to construct an electric fence along the wildlife corridor stretching from Kitengela to Kajiado. This demand comes in light of recurring wildlife intrusions, which have left families vulnerable and in fear for their safety. They expressed concern that the situation had reached a breaking point and demanded immediate containment measures.

In the aftermath of the incident, videos and photos obtained by Teachersupdates.news revealed the lioness still wandering the area, with no reports of it being captured by KWS officers. Witnesses indicated that the Saturday attack occurred around 7pm and that a nearby individual raised the alarm, triggering the emergency response.
This was not the only incident involving wildlife in recent days. In Nyeri County, a 54-year-old man lost his life after being trampled by an elephant in Mere Forest, Kieni East. The man succumbed to his injuries following the encounter, according to KWS.
In another case, residents of Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County were gripped with fear on March 28 when CCTV footage showed a lioness prowling a residential area. The video showed the animal cautiously approaching a secured compound before scaling the concrete wall that supported the metal gate.
