Lecturers Resort to Fuliza and Shylocks as UASU Announces Strike Over Salary Delays
Lecturers in at least seven public universities are up in arms over salary delays, saying they survive on Fuliza and Shylock loans.
The University Academic Staff Union leadership announced that members will picket on the fifth day of each month in protest, starting Monday.
The officials, led by JKUAT chapter secretary general Dr. Shadrack Muya, held a joint press briefing at the JKUAT Juja main campus in Kiambu County.
Muya expressed great concern that by May 17th, their members had not received their salaries for the month of April.
They had fulfilled their duties and served according to their contractual terms, yet they had not received any compensation.

The officials stated that they could no longer tolerate the salary delays because they were turning members into beggars. Muya highlighted that this was a clear violation of the Employment Act 2007 and the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
Uasu JKUAT chapter treasurer Timona Soita mentioned that the delay in salary payments had caused significant hardship to lecturers, affecting their ability to meet financial obligations, such as servicing standing orders, mortgage payments, and school fees.
Consequently, many had to turn to loans from Fuliza, M-shwari, and Shylocks for survival.
Soita described the situation as demeaning and embarrassing for their members, giving examples of professors facing the closure of their rental houses for non-payment of rent or begging school principals not to send home their children over fee arrears.
JKUAT chapter chairman Muiga Rugara accused the government and university management of failing to meet their obligations and exposing public higher education institutions to possible collapse.

Some of the other affected institutions include Moi University, Kenyatta University, the Technical University of Kenya, and Masinde Muliro University of Technology.
The lecturers noted that the pay delays had disrupted essential services tied to statutory contributions, including access to medical services.
