Lecturers‘ Strike: UASU and KUSU Fault Government for CBA Delay.

Two university unions have blamed the government for delaying the implementation of the 2021/2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which they argue has significantly impacted their working conditions.

The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) are leading the strike, which has now entered its second week.

This industrial action has disrupted learning in various universities across the country.

Despite a court ruling calling for a halt to the strike and a shift toward dialogue, the unions remain firm in their demands and have vowed to continue until their issues are resolved.

Protests and Demands

At Maasai Mara University in Narok County, lecturers gathered along the Mulot-Narok town highway to demonstrate, demanding that the government honor the CBA.

The UASU Narok branch Secretary General, Boniface Salambo, emphasized the need for harmonized staff allowances nationwide.

He urged other chapters to join in solidarity by participating in the ongoing industrial action.

Impact and Continuation of the Strike

The strike’s continuation, despite the court’s intervention, underscores the seriousness of the lecturers’ demands.

They remain committed to pressing the government to resolve their grievances related to the delayed CBA implementation.
