List of Expensive Degree Courses in Kenyan Universities and Their Fees.

Top-performing students from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams will be selecting their preferred degree programs through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

KUCCPS will allocate them to various institutions based on their performance and chosen courses. The cost of degree programs varies by institution, with medicine and dental surgery ranking as the most expensive options.

Most Expensive Courses in Kenyan Universities

1. Bachelor of Dental Surgery

According to KUCCPS, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery program at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) costs KSh 780,000.

At the University of Nairobi (UoN), the same program is priced at KSh 613,000, making it one of the priciest courses in Kenya. Moi University offers it under the new funding model at KSh 612,000.

2. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)

More than ten institutions in Kenya provide a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. Egerton University charges KSh 643,940, while the University of Nairobi sets the fee at KSh 636,000.

JKUAT, Maseno University, Moi University, and Kenyatta University each charge KSh 612,000. Reports indicate that Kisii University has the lowest fees at KSh 461,210, followed by Mount Kenya University at KSh 510,000 and Uzima University at KSh 535,000.

3. Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine

The Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery is another costly program. At the University of Nairobi, the tuition and other associated fees total KSh 521,000, whereas JKUAT charges KSh 516,000. From June 2023, Moi University began offering the course at KSh 564,000 annually.

4. Bachelor of Pharmacy

Students aiming for a degree in Pharmacy need to budget over KSh 400,000 per year. The program at Maseno University and Kenyatta University costs KSh 428,400. Those at the University of Nairobi pay KSh 413,950, while Kisii University charges KSh 418,770 for the same course.

5. Bachelor of Engineering

Engineering students should expect to pay over KSh 300,000 annually. The University of Nairobi charges KSh 374,850, while the University of Eldoret, Kenyatta University, and JKUAT set their fees at KSh 336,000.

At the Technical University of Mombasa, the cost is KSh 302,940, slightly higher than the KSh 300,000 charged by the Technical University of Kenya (TUK). The government has capped the differentiated unit cost per student for this program at KSh 396,000 per year.

Highest-Paying Professions in Kenya

Reports indicate that surgeons and doctors earn an average monthly salary of KSh 546,000, justified by the demanding nature of their profession, which requires extensive knowledge and a prolonged learning period.

Judges follow closely with an estimated monthly salary of KSh 459,000, reflecting the significant responsibility they bear in delivering justice. Lawyers, who play a crucial role in conflict resolution within society, earn an average of KSh 371,000 per month.
