M-Pesa Foundation TVET Scholarships at the University of Embu (UoEm): Apply.
The University of Embu (UoEm), in collaboration with the M-Pesa Foundation, is offering scholarships for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes at the University of Embu TVET Institute.
These programmes are designed to equip young people with skills that meet market demands, improve their employability, and prepare them for the job market.
The scholarship will cover tuition fees, provide a monthly stipend throughout the study period, and offer basic trade tools upon graduation.
The courses are set to begin in November 2024, and applications are encouraged from underprivileged youth with limited financial means. The deadline for submitting applications is October 7, 2024.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Kenyan citizen.
- Aged between 15 and 30 years.
- Meet the minimum academic qualifications required for the chosen programme.
- Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
- Priority will be given to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

County-Based Selection
Although all young people from any county are eligible, the scholarships will be rolled out in three phases, with new students admitted in January of 2025, 2026, and 2027. The first cohort, consisting of 400 beneficiaries, will be selected from the following counties:
- Embu
- Nyandarua
- Homa Bay
- Turkana
- Meru
- Nairobi
- Nyamira
- Muranga
- Busia
- Nakuru
Further announcements will be made for other counties.
Programmes Offered
The scholarships cover a variety of courses in the following four areas, with levels ranging from 3 to 6:
- Cosmetology
- Repair and Maintenance of Portable and Mobile Electronic Devices
- Repair and Maintenance of Two- and Three-Wheeled Motorcycles
- Building and Construction
Admission Requirements
Each programme has its own set of minimum entry requirements, which may include academic qualifications such as KCSE or KCPE certificates.
Additionally, prior learning experiences, whether from formal or informal sectors (such as jua kali or work-related engagements), may also be considered.
This flexibility allows for skills gained outside formal education to be used as part of the application process.
Admission Requirements for Different Programmes
The specific requirements for admission into various levels of programmes are outlined below:
Level 6
- Minimum Requirements:
- KCSE Mean Grade of C- (Minus) or its equivalent
- Alternatively, completion of Level 5
Level 5
- Minimum Requirements:
- KCSE Mean Grade of D or its equivalent
- Alternatively, evidence of prior learning in the relevant competency or completion of Level 4
Level 4
- Minimum Requirements:
- KCSE Certificate or its equivalent
- Alternatively, evidence of prior learning in the requisite competency or completion of Level 3
Level 3
- Minimum Requirements:
- KCPE Certificate or an equivalent qualification
- Alternatively, evidence of prior learning in the relevant skill or competency

How to Apply
To apply, candidates should complete the University of Embu TVET Institute’s 1st Cohort Scholarship Application Form. This form is available on the University of Embu website (www.embuni.ac.ke) or can be obtained from any Safaricom Shop.
Supporting Documentation
The following documents are required to support your application:
- Proof of Identity: Either a birth certificate or a national identity card as evidence of age and gender.
- Academic and Competency Evidence: Documentation demonstrating that you meet the admission requirements, such as academic certificates or proof of skills acquired through recognition of prior learning.
- Proof of Economic Need: Evidence of your economic situation, which could include:
- A letter from religious or administrative leaders from your area of origin
- Evidence of receiving financial support in your previous studies
- Death certificates if your parents are deceased
- Disability Documentation: Registration documents if you are a person with a disability.
