Matuu Girls High Refutes Claims of Detaining KCSE Students Over Fee Arrears.
Matuu HGM Memorial Girls High School in Machakos County has dismissed allegations that it detained KCSE candidates due to outstanding fee balances.
The institution clarified that students were not held back but that parents were only reminded of pending fees to facilitate a smoother clearance process for the collection of KCSE certificates.
The school’s secretary, Catherine, refuted the claims, stating no students were prevented from leaving the school after completing their national examinations.
She emphasized that parents were informed of the arrears as a proactive measure to avoid delays during future certificate clearance.
Catherine explained that the school’s intention was misinterpreted. She noted that parents and students were simply asked to acknowledge their fee balances so they could settle them when returning for their certificates.
Parents Raise Concerns Over Alleged Detentions
The school’s clarification followed complaints from some parents who accused the administration of barring students from leaving due to unpaid fees.

These parents argued they had pledged to clear the balances at a later date but were still denied access to their children.
One parent claimed she arrived at the school at 10 a.m. but was informed that she could not take her child home due to KSh 4,500 in outstanding remedial fees.
She reported explaining to the school that the amount would be paid during clearance, but her plea was rejected.
Another parent expressed frustration, recounting her long journey to the school only to find her child allegedly detained.
She stated that, as a long-term contributor to the school’s development, it was unfair for the administration to withhold her child over the balance.
Balancing Obligations and Concerns
The parents argued that the school should have released the students immediately upon completing their exams, given the financial and emotional contributions made over the years.
They felt that enforcing payment at this stage unfairly painted parents in a negative light, despite their efforts to support the institution.
