Ministry of Education Addresses Grade 9 Classrooms and Teachers Recruitment Plan
Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang stated that the ministry is going to build 16,000 additional classrooms for the first cohort of Grade 9 students in 2025.
According to Belio, the classes will be ready by January 2025, when schools will enroll Grade 9 students.
Belio stated that by the time schools open in January, they would have made available 16,000 classrooms to accommodate Grade 9 learners. He emphasized that, as a government, this was a responsibility they would ensure was fulfilled.
The PS stated that it is critical to have learners in a favorable setting. He also said that the government is committed to providing human resources to guarantee high-quality education.
Belio said that as we go into the next financial year, TSC will be recruiting 20,000 teachers, which will go a long way in supporting them in implementing the junior school curriculum.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu reported on March 20 that the ministry lacks 15,021 classrooms that will be occupied by the first cohort of Grade 9 students in 2025.
The CS addressed the Senate in response to a question from Nominated Senator Eddy Oketch about the state’s preparations to accommodate Grade 9 students.

He stated that the ministry had done its assessment and determined a shortage of 15,021 classrooms for those transitioning into Grade 9 in 2025.
Machogu stated that the ministry has computed the number of classrooms required nationwide per county and that he has presented the information to the Senate.
When it comes to the infrastructure requirements for 2025, the CS stated that everything is in place.
He stated that the government provided the NG-CDF with a conditional grant of Sh3.39 billion to access infrastructure resources, which are being disbursed among constituencies.
According to the CS, the conditional grant would be utilized to address the gap by building classrooms.
Machogu mentioned that they had agreed that the CDF was supposed to match the funding from their allocation. He explained that once they built one classroom using this fund, the CDF would also be able to construct another classroom.

This will total 15,000 classrooms.
He mentioned that they were working hard that particular year to ensure that the necessary infrastructural developments in their schools were done in readiness for the admission of Grade 9 learners.
