Moi University Strike Deal to End Lecturer’s Strike.

Moi University has reached an agreement with the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) to resolve the three-month-long strike that had disrupted operations at the institution.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba is set to oversee the signing of the return-to-work formula at the university’s main campus tomorrow.

Following the signing, the CS is expected to announce comprehensive plans for the full resumption of activities at the university.

The strike, primarily fueled by salary-related demands totaling over Sh11 billion, had left more than 2,000 workers out of work for months.

Among the critical demands by the striking workers were Sh5.5 billion earmarked for their pension scheme and Sh1.4 billion for the settlement of outstanding bank loans.

Ojuki Nyabuta, the UASU Chapter Secretary at Moi University, acknowledged ongoing talks with the university management, indicating a likely resolution provided the workers’ demands were addressed.

Progress Through Intensive Negotiations

Throughout the past week, union representatives and the university management have held extensive discussions, reportedly working late hours to iron out outstanding issues.

National union officials have been invited to the Saturday signing ceremony, reflecting the significance of the agreement.

Sources hint that government funding has been secured to help the university restore normal operations, although the exact details of the deal remain under wraps until its formal announcement.

The strike resolution coincides with an ongoing Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigation involving Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgey, three senior staff members, and four council members over allegations of graft.

The individuals implicated have already recorded statements as part of the ongoing probe.

The deal’s finalization marks a significant step toward restoring stability at Moi University, with workers anticipating the resolution of their financial grievances and a return to regular operations.
