Moi University to Lay Off Employees as Student Enrollment Decline.
Moi University has announced plans to lay off several employees due to financial difficulties arising from a decline in student enrollment. The institution cited a significant revenue shortfall, which has hindered its ability to sustain operations and meet financial obligations, including staff salaries.
On Wednesday, acting Vice-Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut issued a notice referencing Section 40 of the Employment Act 2007 and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Moi University and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU). The university formally stated its intention to declare redundancy, affecting several union members.
The notice explained that revenue constraints had created a difficult environment for sustaining operations, making it challenging to fulfill financial commitments, including employee salaries.
The university’s management emphasized that discussions with affected employees and their union representatives were ongoing in accordance with legal provisions and the UASU CBA.
The administration stated the necessity of reviewing operations and adjusting the workforce to maintain the institution’s sustainability. During the notice period, consultations would take place to ensure compliance with legal and contractual obligations.
Efforts to Minimize Impact
While acknowledging the impending job cuts, the university assured that alternative measures were being explored to reduce the impact of redundancy. These options included potential redeployment or reassignment to other roles where possible, adhering to the Employment Act, individual contracts, and the UASU CBA 2012/2013.
