Murang’a County Launches Inua Masomo Programme for Top Students.

Murang’a County has rolled out the Inua Masomo programme for the year, aimed at supporting education by covering school fees for the top ten students in every class at all-day secondary schools within the county. This initiative ensures top-performing students in Forms 2, 3, and 4 have their term one fees fully paid.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata, during the launch event at Kiria-ini Girls High School, highlighted that the initiative aims to improve attendance in high schools and elevate academic performance in day schools.

By empowering students directly, the programme decentralizes bursary allocation from government authorities, placing the decision-making power in the hands of students.

The county governor emphasized that selecting the top students each term fosters a competitive spirit among learners. This merit-based system motivates students to excel in their academics, knowing that consistent performance guarantees continued support.

“The top students will be picked each term, consequently encouraging competition amongst students every term.” He said.

The programme addresses transparency in the bursary distribution process, ensuring that the funds reach deserving students without bias. Additionally, by keeping education funds within Murang’a, the initiative contributes to strengthening the local economy.

Broad Benefits for Vulnerable Students

The Inua Masomo programme benefits over 7,000 students each term by fully covering their school fees. New beneficiaries are added regularly, ensuring support for vulnerable students while rewarding academic excellence. This dual approach makes education both accessible and competitive.

Beyond day schools, the county government will sustain bursary support for boarding school students who were beneficiaries of the Nyota Zetu programme, an initiative launched by the former Governor, Mwangi wa Iria.
