Murang’a County Rolls Out Free Term 1 Fees for Top Students in Day Schools.

Murang’a County Government has introduced the Inua Masomo Programme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving access to education and fostering academic excellence in Day Secondary Schools.

The programme focuses on fully covering Term 1 school fees for the top 10 students in Forms 2, 3, and 4 from all Day Secondary Schools within the county. This support will be extended each term, ensuring consistent motivation and retention of top-performing students.

The initiative targets 8,000 students across 256 day schools within Murang’a County. The top 10 students in each school will be selected every term, encouraging academic competition and improved performance.

This system, according to Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, enhances transition rates while taking the control of bursary distribution away from the government and placing it directly in the hands of the students through an objective selection process.

Economic and Ethical Benefits

The Inua Masomo initiative contributes to the local economy by retaining education funds within the county. Its transparent selection process eliminates corruption and favoritism, ensuring that only deserving students benefit. No vetting committees are involved, which enhances fairness and credibility in bursary allocation.

During the programme’s launch at Kiriani Girls, leaders from Meru and Kiambu Counties praised the initiative and expressed interest in replicating it in their regions.

Meru County Assembly Leader of Minority, Mwendwa Ithili, pledged to advocate for similar support for day schools in Meru. Ithili commended Kang’ata for addressing the challenges faced by students in day schools and setting a model worth following.

Inua Masomo complements the county’s Nyota Zetu Programme, which provides bursaries for students in boarding schools, alleviating the burden of high school fees on parents.

Additionally, Murang’a County supports university students through a collaboration with the Murang’a Budget and Economic Council, a think-tank comprising top economic and academic experts from the region.

By integrating these initiatives, the Murang’a County Government continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing education and reducing financial barriers for learners at all levels.
