New Era at UoN: Prof. Ayub Gitau Takes Charge After Turbulent Leadership Period.
The University of Nairobi (UoN) will formally install Professor Eng. Ayub Njoroge Gitau as its ninth Vice-Chancellor, marking the beginning of a new administration following a period of leadership transition and governance challenges at Kenya’s oldest and largest public university.
The investiture ceremony, scheduled to be held at the University’s Taifa Hall, will bring together members of the university community, government officials, diplomats, alumni, development partners and industry stakeholders for the formal installation of the institution’s chief academic and administrative officer.
The installation follows more than a year of governance challenges that affected the university’s leadership structures, including disputes involving the University Council, management and other stakeholders.
Leadership Transition at University of Nairobi
Professor Gitau assumes office after the exit of former Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama, whose tenure ended following months of disagreements surrounding governance and administrative matters.
The leadership disputes resulted in legal proceedings, public engagements and uncertainty over the university’s administration before Professor Margaret Hutchinson was appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor to oversee the institution during the transition period.
The transition period was also accompanied by governance reforms, including the reconstitution of the University Council as efforts were undertaken to strengthen institutional stability and improve administrative oversight.
The University of Nairobi stated that the installation of Professor Gitau represents a continuation of institutional leadership and a new phase in the university’s administration.
“As the ninth Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eng. Ayub Njoroge Gitau joins a distinguished lineage of academic leaders. His installation marks not only the beginning of a new administration but also the continuation of a proud tradition of visionary leadership that has shaped generations of students, scholars, innovators and professionals,” the University stated.
