Parliament Committee Demands Immediate Confirmation of 46,000 JSS Teachers.

The National Parliament Committee on Education voiced frustration over the delay in confirming the intern teachers.

Chairman Julius Melly highlighted that the TSC had been allocated Sh18 billion and expected all 46,000 interns to have been confirmed by now.

He sought clarity on when job advertisements for these positions would be issued and inquired about the reasons for the prolonged confirmation process.

Melly expressed the committee’s concerns about the process and the lack of timely confirmations for the teachers.

This new information has been disappointing for the intern teachers, who had anticipated an automatic transition after receiving prior assurances from the government.

One intern described the situation as a significant setback, echoing the disappointment shared among her colleagues.

This comes as the Ministry of Education seeks to subject 46,000 JSS teachers to fresh application for TSC’s permanent jobs considerations.

Opposition from Teachers’ Unions

This initiative has faced opposition from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu highlighted that once teachers are interns, they should transition to permanent and pensionable terms rather than needing to apply anew.

He emphasized that applying for a new position should only occur when seeking a different job.

Current Salary Situation for Intern Teachers

Intern teachers receive significantly lower compensation compared to their counterparts in permanent roles. For instance, an intern teacher at a secondary school earns a gross monthly salary of Sh. 20,000, while a primary school intern receives Sh. 15,000.

After deductions, these amounts are reduced to approximately Sh. 17,000 and Sh. 13,000, respectively.
