Prof. Elizabeth Kalunda: From High School Teacher to Deputy Vice Chancellor
There are those who talk about success and those who actively pursue their dreams. Prof. Elizabeth Kalunda epitomizes the latter.
Once a high school teacher, she grew restless in her job, dreamed of more, and pursued further education, eventually becoming the Deputy Vice Chancellor of a leading Kenyan private university and the Vice Chairperson of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
Kalunda’s journey began in Machakos, teaching home science in a lesser-known school. She reflected on her love for teaching but felt there was more to achieve. She believed that changing her environment and pushing herself further would bring fulfillment.

Her determination led her to pursue further studies, transitioning from a Bachelor of Education in Home Science and Technology to accounting.
She loved mathematics and numbers, motivating her to earn her CPA qualifications and a Master’s degree. With her newfound qualifications, she moved from a basic employee role to becoming a sought-after professional in accounting.

Her career trajectory shifted as she transitioned from teaching to becoming a professional accountant.
There, she enrolled in Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exams, excelling in her studies and receiving recognition as one of the top students in the country.
With her passion for teaching, Kalunda considered lecturing. She realized an MBA was now a minimal requirement and decided to pursue a Doctorate in banking to diversify her skills.
Kalunda’s academic pursuits didn’t stop at her Master’s degree. She went on to complete a Doctorate in Banking, broadening her expertise and enhancing her professional credentials.
Achievements and Leadership
Today, Kalunda serves as the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations at the United States International University (USIU-Africa). She encourages women to pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem. She advises writing down dreams, setting goals, and striving towards them.
Beyond her academic and professional achievements, Kalunda is also a prominent figure in the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), serving as the Vice Chairperson.
