Junior Starlets Striker Serenge Opts for World Cup Glory, Skips KCSE Exams
Marion Serenge, a striker for the Junior Starlets, has chosen to skip her Form Four national examinations to play in this year’s Under-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
This decision, made after consulting with her family, prioritizes the national team’s assignment over her KCSE exams, which overlap with the World Cup dates from October 16 to November 3.
Fred Serenge, Marion’s father and a former Harambee Stars player, supports her decision. He emphasized the significance of the World Cup as a unique opportunity that could open doors to scholarships and professional opportunities in European clubs.
Fred believes exams can be taken at any time, but participating in a World Cup is a rare and invaluable experience.
Personal Recognition and Team Achievements
In June, Marion was named the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month, having played a crucial role in the Junior Starlets’ historic qualification for the World Cup.

The team secured their spot by defeating Burundi in a two-leg match. Marion’s decisive goal in the second leg contributed to their 5-0 aggregate win, making them the first Kenyan national football team to qualify for a World Cup.
Marion is not alone in facing this dilemma. Other players, including goalkeeper Velma Auma, defenders Christine Adhiambo and Lorine Ilavonga, and Velma Awuor, are also balancing their commitment to the team with their academic responsibilities.
These players, from various schools such as Archbishop Njenga, Wiyeta Girls, and Nyakach Secondary, are navigating the same challenging choice.
Hopes and Future Plans
Fred Serenge expressed hope that the government would arrange for special exams for players representing their country.
He suggested that even if this plan doesn’t materialize, Marion, being one of the youngest players, can take her exams next year.
The Junior Starlets’ journey began with a 3-0 victory against Burundi at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Ethiopia on June 9.
The team continued their success with a 2-0 win in the second leg at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on June 16. Marion scored the opening goal in this match, further solidifying her impact on the team’s performance.
