Raila Slams CS Machogu’s Late Directives on School Reopening

Azimio Chief Principal Raila Odinga accused the Education CS of failing to do his duties, stating that Machogu’s late directive affected many students.

The ODM leader commented that schools were supposed to reopen, but authorities waited until the last minute, causing inconvenience to students who had already traveled to school.

Odinga pointed out that the Ministry only announced the decision to halt school reopening after students had already arrived.

“They said schools would reopen, but they waited until the last minute after students had traveled to school and released a statement blocking school reopening,” the leader of the opposition party said.

Confusion over school reopening began on Monday when hundreds of primary and secondary school children arrived at their respective schools only to discover that the government had postponed the second term’s opening date.

The Education Ministry announced late at night that they would not reopen until May 6, 2024.

During the second meeting, which President William Ruto presided over, the Cabinet approved the Ministry of Education’s proposal to delay school reopenings by one week and ordered them to resume on Monday.

The Cabinet then directed that schools resume on May 6, despite the government’s efforts to rebuild institutions damaged by catastrophic floods.

On Monday, Basic Education PS Bellio Kipsang issued a circular instructing school administrators not to send all students who had reported to school home.

Kipsang also urged students who had not reported to school to stay at home as the one-week postponement took effect.

Later on Friday, President William Ruto postponed the reopening of school for the second term until further notice.

Ruto issued the decree, instructing the Ministry of Education to ensure that schools remain closed owing to the continuous floods that have created havoc across the country.
