Rongai Sub-County Receives Sh14M Bursary Fund.
Rongai Sub-County, located in Nakuru County, faces significant challenges in delivering quality education despite having numerous public schools.
Many parts of the Sub-County are classified as Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), where poverty severely limits families’ ability to support their children’s education.
Bursary Fund Disbursed to Support Needy Students
In a bid to address these challenges, the Nakuru County government disbursed the first tranche of its bursary fund, totaling Sh14,583,500.
This financial assistance targets at least 3,600 needy students in public day schools and vocational training centers within the Soin, Visoi, Mosop, Menengai West, and Solai wards of Rongai Sub-County.
The distribution ceremony, held at Kampi ya Moto Secondary School in Visoi Ward, was presided over by Deputy Governor David Kones.
He emphasized that vocational training is vital for equipping young people with employable skills and urged parents to enroll their children in these centers.
The county government provides a capitation of Ksh30,000 per student in vocational institutions.
Importance of Education in ASAL Regions
The Deputy Governor outlined several reasons why investing in education in ASAL regions is critical:
Benefits of Education in ASAL Regions |
---|
Breaking the cycle of poverty by empowering students with skills for better livelihoods. |
Reducing socio-economic disparities and ensuring access to quality education for all children. |
Developing future human capital, vital for societal growth. |
Promoting sustainable development by equipping students to address challenges like climate change, nutrition, and environmental degradation. |
Kones underscored that education in these regions is not just an investment in individuals but also in the broader future of the country.
He stated that educated individuals are crucial for fostering long-term economic and social development.
The Deputy Governor further highlighted vocational training as an effective pathway for self-reliance and employment.
With financial assistance through bursaries, the county is empowering young people to pursue education and gain valuable skills, ensuring they can contribute meaningfully to society.
Call for Water Supply in Rongai
Beyond education, residents in Rongai Sub-County face a pressing need for water supply. Gilbert Kaplich, a local resident, called on the county government to prioritize water access.
He noted that the lack of water has perpetuated poverty, forcing families to spend their limited resources on expensive water purchases.
Kaplich pointed out that ASAL regions possess vast, unutilized lands that could drive economic development if provided with adequate water.
He argued that investing in water infrastructure could leave a transformative legacy, enabling residents to harness the region’s potential for agricultural and economic growth.

Kaplich also humorously observed that the long distances walked to fetch water keep residents physically fit, but he stressed the need to redirect government savings on healthcare to address the water crisis.
The bursary initiative represents a significant step toward ensuring equal access to quality education in Rongai Sub-County, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Coupled with efforts to address water scarcity, these measures could pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for the region.
