Scrap CBC: MP Advocates for Return to 8-4-4 System.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has called for the reintroduction of the 8-4-4 education system, urging the government to discard the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Kaluma voiced his concerns that the CBC lacks the necessary support in terms of facilities and resources to be effectively implemented in Kenya.
On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Kaluma pointed out that since the CBC’s introduction in 2017, students have not been learning effectively.
He urged the government to revert to the 8-4-4 system to secure the educational future of the country.

Kaluma raised these concerns amid growing dissatisfaction with the CBC system, which focuses on developing students’ skills and competencies instead of traditional academic knowledge.
“Kenya lacks facilities and resources to implement CBC. Our children are not learning. Let’s revert to 8-4-4 and save the future generations of Kenya,” he stated.
According to UNESCO, a competency-based curriculum emphasizes what learners are expected to do, rather than focusing only on theoretical knowledge.
The CBC was introduced to replace the 8-4-4 system, which UNESCO had previously described as too rigid, providing limited opportunities to tailor education to students’ career interests, aptitudes, and abilities.

The 8-4-4 system, established in 1985 under President Daniel Moi, followed recommendations by the Presidential Working Party on the Second University in Kenya.
The system consisted of 8 years of primary education, 4 years of secondary education, and 4 years of university education.
