Teacher Unions Decry Career Stagnation and Lack of Promotions.
Kenya’s two main teachers’ unions, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), have expressed growing frustration over the lack of career advancement opportunities for teachers
Ronald Kiprotich Tonui, KUPPET’s Assistant National Treasurer, highlighted the deep dissatisfaction among teachers who have been stuck in the same job group for over a decade.
He emphasized that the stagnation in promotions has led to widespread disillusionment within the profession, as many teachers feel there is no clear path for growth or improvement.

The union has called for the proper funding of promotions, arguing that merit-based promotions should not depend on personal loans or other questionable methods.
The failure to promote teachers has had a demoralizing effect on the profession, and KUPPET insists that this issue must be resolved in the next CBA.
Promotion Delays and Hardship Allowances
Former KNUT Trustee James Mwasambwa echoed the concerns raised about the systemic issues contributing to teacher stress. He pointed out that 286 teachers in Taita Taveta had been overlooked for promotions due to their affiliation with KNUT, a situation he described as unjust.
He called on the union leadership to rectify this oversight, ensuring that all teachers receive fair treatment regarding career advancement.

Mwasambwa also touched on the delays in hardship allowances, noting that these unresolved grievances significantly contribute to the stress endured by teachers.
He lauded the union for its recent strategic negotiations that averted a strike but warned that unless these issues are resolved, teachers will continue to face undue hardships.
