Senior Schools to Offer Two career Pathways for Grades 10 to 12
Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary of Basic Education, revealed that the ministry intends for each senior school to provide two professional pathways for students in Grades 10 through 12.
This initiative, according to Kipsang, aims to maximize the economic investment in these organizations. He underlined that every school must have at least two pathways to maintain economic viability.
Furthermore, Kipsang stated that selected national schools will provide up to three job paths: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), social sciences (humanities), and performing arts, music, and athletics.
Kipsang made these statements at a stakeholder engagement on senior school and teacher education held at Nairobi’s Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.
He urged stakeholders to collaborate with the ministry to categorize schools into distinct tracks. This, he noted, is critical in providing clear direction on the operation of senior schools as the ministry prepares to enroll the first cohort of students in 2026.
Furthermore, Kipsang emphasized the need to recognize the learner’s needs and national criteria when determining professional pathways.

Kipsang suggested that learners explore pursuing both a major and a minor career route.
He questioned the level of learning, the balance of theory and practice, and the assessment methodologies used during the three-year senior school program.
On March 20, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced the production of a session paper for legislative consideration that detailed the number of job paths offered by each institution.
Machogu avoided preempting the parliamentary debate, stating that the sessional paper will provide advice once discussed.

Furthermore, he mentioned the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development’s (KICD) curriculum development for Grade 10 students, which aims to encourage specialization and talent development across numerous sectors.
“We want to encourage talent. Not everyone is gifted in science or the humanities, but some of us excel in the arts. “We want to nurture learners who have been identified as being good in a specific area,” Machogu said.
