State Assures Teachers Security in Banditry Zones

The government has assured security for teachers working in banditry-hit areas in the North Rift to ensure uninterrupted learning.

Ezekiel Machogu, the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS), emphasized that the government’s primary responsibility is to protect human life and property, and he pledged to make every effort to ensure the safety of teachers and students in affected regions.

Machogu stated that the ministry has not closed any schools despite several reported attacks in Baringo County.

He noted that his ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to secure learning institutions in the affected areas.

Furthermore, Machogu mentioned that the Ministry of Interior, alongside county and sub-county education directors, is assessing the situation to enable the Ministry of Education to implement measures to support education in affected regions.

He expressed awareness that, due to fear, some teachers and students are not attending school. However, he stated that they are working with the Interior Ministry to evaluate the situation before declaring the closure of any affected schools.

The CS called for calm, assuring that the ministry is managing the situation and will issue a comprehensive statement once the ongoing assessment is complete.

During a Thanksgiving ceremony for last year’s KCSE results at Henry Kosgey Kibukwo Secondary School in Tinderet, Nandi County, the CS reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in the country, stating that acts of lawlessness aimed at disrupting learning will not be tolerated.

Accompanying the CS were Tinderet Member of Parliament (MP) Julius Melly, Emgwen MP Josses Lelmengit, and Tinderet Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Esther Oyugi, among others.

Melly, who also chairs the National Assembly Committee on Education, expressed concern about the security of teachers in the bandit-hit areas. He mentioned that the committee has written to Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki, requesting a detailed report on the situation in the affected regions.

“We are awaiting the Interior CS’s report so that the committee can deliberate on it and formulate recommendations,” he stated.
