TSC Exports First Batch of Kenyan Teachers to US for Employment
The Kenyan Government dispatched the first group of teachers to the United States on Saturday.
This move follows the policy and regulatory framework established by the State Department of Diaspora Affairs and the Teachers Service Commission in February 2024.
Ambassador Isaiya Kabira, Secretary of Investments and Entrepreneurship, saw off the initial batch of teachers heading to the US.
The State Department of Diaspora Affairs explained that this initiative aimed to enhance Kenya’s socio-economic development by securing job opportunities abroad.
“The recruitment initiative offers comprehensive support during the transition period through pre-departure sessions,” the Department revealed of the exercise.
The Department stated that in line with their mandate to promote the welfare of the Kenyan diaspora, the recruitment initiative offers comprehensive support during the transition period through pre-departure sessions.
They highlighted the broader impact of labor mobility and Kenya’s position in the global labor market.
Expanding Opportunities for Kenyan Teachers
Following the February 2024 assessment, there was a noted increasing demand for Kenyan teachers both in Africa and outside the continent.
Consequently, more teachers are expected to be sent to various countries in the coming days.
This assessment aligns with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s broader strategy of exporting labor to countries with bilateral agreements with Kenya.
Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore reported on February 3 that 500 migrant workers had been sent to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

However, the July 6 batch marked the first instance of exporting a team for skilled employment. Traditionally, most Kenyans have gone abroad as unskilled or semi-skilled workers.
President William Ruto has previously announced Kenya’s goal to export up to 5,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers every week. This initiative is part of a broader effort to boost the country’s socio-economic standing through strategic labor mobility.
