TSC Honored for Driving Women Empowerment Amidst Gender Equality Surge
Enabling women’s economic capabilities has been seen as the key to reaching important milestones in gender equality.
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) emerged as a beacon of success on the path to gender equality as the world commemorated International Women’s Day on March 8 under the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
Joining millions of people around the world in celebrating the annual event, the TSC took to social media, using the hashtag #inspireinclusion to emphasize its commitment to furthering women’s rights.
Kenya’s public service sector is undergoing a significant wave of change, rapidly recognizing itself as a critical venue for eradicating gender prejudices and promoting a more egalitarian future.
The TSC’s commitment to gender equity has not been ignored. The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) recently honored the TSC as one of 21 public sector organizations leading the charge to promote gender equality.
This award was given following a careful examination of the various metrics stated in the Status for Gender Equality and Inclusion Report for FY 2022-2023.
The indicators include gender mainstreaming budget allocation, women’s workforce representation, adherence to the not-more-than-two-thirds gender rule, and implementation of gender-based violence regulations.
Joyce Mutinda, Chairperson of NGEC, stated that the 21 honorees were chosen from a pool of 341 state agencies based on factors, all of which the TSC scored higher than 70%.
The TSC has made significant initiatives to support female educators, most notably the implementation of an expanded maternity package.
Extended maternity leave
This package, which will be implemented in 2022 as part of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiated by teachers’ unions and the TSC, will provide female teachers in public schools with extended maternity leave of 90 to 120 days, excluding yearly leave.
This one-month extension exceeds the maternity benefits available to other state officers, highlighting the TSC’s commitment to gender-sensitive policy.
Investments in women’s education, skill development, and financial access are viewed as critical to their economic empowerment.

Kenya stands to benefit by providing women with the appropriate skills and opportunities, allowing them to reach their full potential, and strengthening the national economy.
International Women’s Day serves as a global platform for lobbying for larger issues such as women’s rights and gender equality.
This annual event, which began in 1911 and has been officially recognized by the United Nations since 1975, serves as a reminder of both the accomplishments accomplished and the obstacles that still lie ahead in achieving gender equality.
