TSC Meets Teachers’ Unions to Avert imminent Strike
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to hold crucial discussions with teachers’ unions on August 21, aiming to avert an impending strike that could disrupt the reopening of schools for the third term.
This meeting, scheduled for 10:00 am, is a part of the government’s broader efforts to resolve a Ksh13.3 billion pay dispute that has stirred unrest among educators.
Looming Strike and Its Implications
The unresolved pay dispute has led to a nationwide strike threat scheduled for August 26, which could significantly disrupt learning in public schools just as the third term is about to commence. The potential strike could paralyze educational activities across the country.

Following the day’s discussions, representatives from teachers’ unions are expected to engage in a joint roundtable with officials from the Ministries of Labour, Treasury, and Education.
These discussions are part of a concerted effort to address the grievances of the teachers and find a resolution.
Core Issues in the Dispute
At the heart of the dispute is the TSC’s failure to implement the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This phase, initially signed in 2021 and updated with an addendum in 2023, was scheduled for implementation on July 1, 2024.
