Factors Influencing House Allowances
The house allowance rates vary depending on two main factors:
- Teacher’s Job Group: Higher job grades attract higher allowances.
- Work Station Location: Teachers in urban centers or high-cost areas receive more than those in rural areas.

To standardize the allowance distribution, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) categorizes teachers into different regions and job groups. The regions include:
- Nairobi
- Former Major Municipalities: Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, and Kitale.
- Other Former Municipalities: Ruiru, Kikuyu, Kitui, Machakos, Mlolongo, Athi River, Vihiga, Wote, Mumias, Bomet, Limuru, and Kericho.
- Other Areas: Smaller towns and rural regions.
TSC House Allowance Rates Per Region and Job Group
1. Nairobi and Former Major Municipalities
Teachers in Nairobi receive the highest house allowances due to the elevated cost of living and rental rates. Those in major towns also receive relatively higher allowances. The table below outlines the updated rates for 2024:
