TSC New Rules for Teacher Registration and Recruitment: What You Need to Know.
Aspiring teachers and those currently in training will face updated regulations issued by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for registration and recruitment.
These changes are aimed at ensuring only qualified candidates join the teaching profession.
Stricter Entry Requirements for TTC-Trained Teachers
Teachers trained in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) must now meet tighter entry grade requirements.
Candidates specializing in Mathematics will need a minimum of D+ in the subject, while those trained in English must achieve a C+ in KCSE.

Additionally, they must attain a Mean Grade of C+ in KCSE to qualify for TSC registration.
Previously, TTC-trained teachers only needed a general minimum grade of C in KCSE, with no specific requirements for subject grades.
This change represents a significant shift in the Commission’s focus on quality standards.
New Rules for University Graduates
For university graduates, the TSC has introduced subject-specific grade requirements.
All graduates must now have a B- in both Mathematics and English in their KCSE, while the overall Mean Grade requirement remains at C+.
Under the earlier rules, graduates only needed to meet the KCSE minimum grade and specialize in two teaching subjects.
Ensuring Quality in Teaching
TSC stated that the updated regulations are critical for maintaining high teaching standards in classrooms.
A 2016 study conducted by Karatina University revealed that poor performance in Mathematics and English in national exams stems from teachers’ KCSE grades in these subjects.
The report, which focused on Nyandarua and Bureti in Kericho County, likely influenced TSC’s decision to implement these reforms.
The study highlighted that recruiting Form Four graduates with better subject-specific grades could significantly improve teaching quality in these areas.
Implications for Prospective Teachers
These changes have caused confusion and uncertainty among aspiring and newly trained teachers, particularly those seeking employment with the Commission.
Most affected are recent graduates and youthful educators, whose career paths are now impacted by the revised standards.
Alignment with the CBC Curriculum
Unlike before, TSC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, now requires teacher trainees in universities and colleges to specialize in specific subjects.
This move aligns with the demands of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), ensuring that educators are better equipped to teach specialized areas effectively.
