TSC Nyanza Regional Director Njage Appointed SRC Commissioner.

President William Ruto has officially appointed Jane Gatakaa Njage, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Nyanza Regional Director, as a Commissioner in the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). This appointment positions her as the teachers’ employer’s representative in the commission.

Njage, originally from Embu County, joined five other commissioners in taking the oath of office last week for a six-year term at SRC. The ceremony was presided over by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Winfridah Mokaya, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre on January 20, 2025, and witnessed by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Sammy Chepkwony, the new SRC Chairperson who succeeds Lyn Mengich, was also sworn in during the event.

President Ruto had nominated Njage to the SRC in November 2024. Her nomination underwent vetting by the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee, chaired by Erick Muchangi, the Runyenjes MP, later that month.

Her selection emphasizes her capacity to contribute to the commission’s critical mandate of regulating remuneration and benefits for public officers.

Other Appointments to SRC

The newly sworn-in commissioners include Mohammed Aden, representing County Governments; Leonid Ashindu, from the Association of Professional Societies in East Africa; Dr. Gilda Odera, representing the Federation of Kenya Employers; and Dr. Geoffrey Apollo, representing the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU). Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Martin Kizito has also joined the SRC, representing the Defense Council.

During the ceremony, Chepkwony emphasized SRC’s dedication to ensuring equitable and sustainable wage policies aligned with Kenya’s economic conditions. He highlighted the commission’s focus on fostering public service efficiency, strengthening stakeholder collaboration, and promoting mutual cooperation across sectors.

The SRC’s role encompasses setting and reviewing remuneration and benefits for State officers while advising both national and county governments on public officers’ pay structures. This critical mandate ensures a balance between fair compensation and fiscal sustainability within the public sector.

All SRC commissioners, including the chairperson, are set to serve a six-year term, contributing their expertise to steer Kenya’s wage policies and benefits framework toward economic sustainability and improved governance.
