TSC Recruitment: Over 314,000 Unemployed Teachers Scramble for 46,000 Positions.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) advertised a total of 46,000 vacancies on October 1, which led to 314,117 unemployed teachers submitting applications.

Among these, 6,000 positions were for primary teachers, attracting 93,646 applicants. The commission also offered 450 positions for secondary school teachers, which received 76,294 applications.

Furthermore, 144,117 candidates applied for 39,550 junior secondary school positions under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) initiative.

Unemployment Situation

This surge in applications highlights the growing unemployment crisis among teaching graduates, which is further worsened by the rising cost of living in the country.

The significant number of applicants shows that many teachers remain jobless, as the available vacancies fall short of the total applications received.

The application window was open between October 1 and October 8. Despite the high number of applications, only a fraction of applicants will secure a position, leaving the majority still unemployed due to the limited number of vacancies.

Breakdown of Applications for TSC Jobs

  • Primary Teacher Positions: 6,000 vacancies attracted 93,646 applicants.
  • Secondary Teacher Positions: 450 vacancies received 76,294 applications.
  • Junior Secondary Positions: 39,550 slots attracted 144,117 applications.

Job Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the TSC jobs were required to meet specific qualifications, which included:

  • Kenyan citizenship.
  • A minimum of a P1 certificate for primary school applicants.
  • A diploma in education for junior and secondary school applicants.
  • Registration with the TSC.

Additionally, serving interns were also allowed to apply for the advertised positions.
