Who is a C1 Teacher?

A C1 teacher, known as a Primary Teacher I, is a primary school educator with specific qualifications and experience as outlined by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

This position serves as an entry-level employment category, with teachers classified into different job groups. The C1 grade represents a specific ranking within this classification.

Determining C1 Teacher Salaries

Several factors influence a C1 teacher’s salary in Kenya. Salaries differ based on academic qualifications and teaching experience. Additionally, teachers receive various allowances to support their work and improve service delivery.

How to Become a C1 Teacher in Kenya

To qualify as a primary teacher, one must obtain at least a diploma in education and acquire several years of teaching experience. Many teachers progress from lower grades such as Primary Teacher II to attain this level. Specific qualifications are necessary for placement on the C1 pay scale.

Paul Onami, a senior teacher at Alliance High School, stated that a teacher must meet at least one of the following academic and professional requirements to be placed in grade C1:

  • Primary school teachers must hold a diploma in education. P1 teachers advance from B5 to C1 after three years of service and successful appraisals.
  • Secondary school teachers must possess a diploma in education for secondary teaching. Those previously in B5 or new diploma holders are placed in C1.

For primary school teachers, progression from Grade B5 to C1 requires at least three years of service in B5, a positive performance appraisal (TPAD), and completion of professional development programs mandated by TSC.

Responsibilities of a C1 Teacher

C1 teachers play a vital role in providing foundational education and maintaining high academic standards. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Classroom Teaching – They instruct primary school learners in various subjects and manage classes following the national curriculum.
  • Lesson Planning and Student Assessment – They plan lessons, prepare teaching materials, administer tests, and assign tasks to evaluate student progress.
  • Mentorship and Leadership – Apart from teaching, they take on leadership roles within schools and mentor junior colleagues.

While all C1 teachers belong to the same job group, their salaries vary due to multiple factors. The pay differences arise from experience level within C1 (annual salary increments apply), school level (whether teaching in primary or secondary), and geographical location (teachers in hardship areas receive additional allowances).

Various allowances also contribute to these salary variations.

Allowances for Grade C1 ( T Scale 6) Teachers

The government has also implemented many allowances to improve teachers’ total pay packages.

In addition to basic salaries, C1 teachers receive various allowances to cater to their specific needs and ensure effective service delivery. House allowance varies depending on the teacher’s workstation:

  • Cluster 1 – Teachers in Nairobi receive a house allowance of Ksh 10,000.
  • Cluster 2 – Those in major cities such as Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru receive Ksh 7,500.
  • Cluster 3 – Teachers in former municipalities receive Ksh 5,800.
  • Cluster 4 – Teachers in all other areas receive Ksh 5,000.

C1 Teacher Salary Increment in Kenya

The yearly salary increment for C1 teachers in Kenya is determined by the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Their salary increases annually as stipulated in the agreement, following a structured salary scale. However, when a new CBA is introduced, it may alter the terms, and the revised conditions take effect accordingly.

The salary and allowances for teachers in TSC job group C1 are based on six payment levels. The monthly salary falls within a range of Ksh 28,491 to Ksh 35,614, depending on the specific salary point.
