TSC Says Only 742 JSS Intern Teachers Sacked, Explains Why

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that only 742 Junior Secondary School intern teachers have been dismissed in connection with mass protests demanding permanent employment.

The protests began nationwide on May 13 when schools reopened for the second term.

On May 22, TSC issued show-cause letters to the protesting teachers who had failed to report to their duties. The teachers were given a two-week deadline to respond to these letters.

According to the Commission, 10,348 teachers who had absented themselves from work starting May 13, 2024, were required to explain their absence.

“10,348 who absented themselves from work from May 13, 2024, were given show-cause letters to explain their whereabouts,” the Commission said.

Of the 10,348 teachers who received show-cause letters, 9,606 responded within the stipulated period.

However, TSC noted that 742 teachers who neither reported to work nor explained their absence had their contracts terminated and were replaced.

This group represents 1.6% of the total 46,000 interns employed by TSC across the country.

The Star has reviewed termination letters sent by the Commission to these intern teachers, dated June 6. The letters, dated June 6, indicated that several teachers were dismissed for what TSC described as “professional misconduct.”

The termination letters stated that the teachers’ internships were terminated effective June 6, 2024, due to their desertion of duty since May 13, 2024.

The Commission had provided an opportunity to the teachers to explain why their internships should not be terminated due to professional misconduct, as referenced in the show-cause letter dated May 22, 2024.

After careful consideration of the responses, TSC found some of them unsatisfactory, leading to the termination of 742 intern teachers.
