University Funding Appeals Delayed, Education Ministry Confirms.

University students raising concerns about the current funding model will need to wait longer for their appeals to be processed, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos stated.

He announced that the correction of student banding, where necessary, is pending as the ministry has not yet initiated the appeals process.

Delayed Appeals Process

On Tuesday, Migos addressed the Parliamentary Committee on Education, explaining that the ministry has not begun addressing appeals. He explained that students were asked to submit their complaints and assured that they would not be turned away from school in the meantime.

“On the question of appeals, we have not started working on them because we said bring them in…you’re in school; you are not being told to go away.”

The CS emphasized that students will continue their studies while the appeals process unfolds. Once all students have had the opportunity to participate in exams, an analysis will be conducted to address their concerns.

“We are going to ensure we conduct the exams so that we can do an analysis when everybody has had a chance. So, it’s an ongoing exercise,” said Migos.

The complaints portal will remain open until December, Migos added, stating that the ministry is awaiting a team to conduct a thorough review of the submissions.

Ministry’s Assurance

Despite the delay in the process, the Education Ministry reassured students that they can continue attending their classes.

The CS reaffirmed that the students’ academic progress would not be hindered as the ministry works on addressing their appeals.

Later, the CS joined Felix Koskei, Head of Public Service, in overseeing the 129-member committee established by President William Ruto. The committee was tasked with reviewing the university funding model.

Koskei urged the committee to engage in broad consultations, advising them to include various stakeholders.

He highlighted the importance of input from education professionals, parents, associations, lobbyists, regulators, and students to ensure that the recommendations receive widespread approval.
