18 Public Universities Continued With Academic Programmes Despite Lecturers Strike — Dr. Inyangala.
Speaking at the 13th Chuka University graduation ceremony in Tharaka Nithi County, Dr. Inyangala indicated that the government accepted the Sh9.7 billion proposal to settle lecturers’ Collective Bargaining Agreements.
Dr. Inyangala acknowledged the challenges posed by the industrial action, which disrupted academic programmes across numerous institutions.
Despite this, 18 universities remained operational, continuing teaching and learning to align with students’ academic schedules.
She commended Chuka University for fostering a collaborative environment with its lecturers to maintain academic activities during the strike.
Universities Supporting Academic Continuity
The PS highlighted institutions that upheld academic continuity during the strike, including Kenyatta University, Egerton University, University of Embu, Murang’a University of Technology, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology.

Other universities mentioned were Kirinyaga University, Kibabii University, Mama Ngina University College, Open University of Kenya, Tharaka University, and Turkana University College, among others.
Dr. Inyangala lauded Chuka University’s graduation theme, Enhancing Global and National Sustainable Development through Quality Higher Education, Research, and Enterprise, for aligning with Kenya Kwanza’s development agenda.
She emphasized the significance of President William Ruto’s new student-centred university funding model, designed to improve access to higher education.
The PS also praised Chuka University for adopting alternative revenue streams to strengthen its financial base.
Chuka University’s Focus on Fiscal Stability
Chuka University Vice Chancellor Prof. Henry Mutembei detailed his administration’s efforts to achieve fiscal stability by enforcing stringent budgetary controls and prioritizing essential expenditures.
The university has diversified its income sources through Income Generating Units and attracted research and development grants worth over Sh170 million in the 2023-2024 academic year.
Prof. Mutembei highlighted the university’s improved performance in webometrics rankings, moving from position 37 to 24, which he attributed to enhanced web presence, transparency, and increased research activities.

He reaffirmed the university’s dedication to supporting the government’s goal of making education accessible and affordable.
Meanwhile, the university reiterated its commitment to advancing the government’s agenda of providing inclusive and affordable education for all, ensuring continued contributions to national development through quality education and research.
