Kisii Teacher Commits Suicide After Domestic Dispute, Exposes Mental Health Concerns.
The body of a secondary school teacher, Vincent Mogeni, was discovered hanging from an avocado tree in Kisii County on Monday morning. His disappearance had been reported the previous evening.
Mogeni, who was an intern Mathematics teacher at Metembe Secondary School in Nyaribari Masaba constituency, went missing after leaving his home on Sunday evening following a domestic quarrel with his wife.
The argument arose when Mogeni returned from a local bar, where he reportedly sold his wife’s phone to fund more drinks.
Upon his return home, Mogeni’s wife confronted him about the missing phone, leading to a heated exchange. He then stormed out and did not return. His body was found the following morning by schoolchildren, who alerted the villagers.
Authorities from Masimba Police Station arrived at the scene and transported the body to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Community’s Shock and Reactions
The tragic news left the community in shock. Villagers and colleagues remembered Mogeni as a kind-hearted, helpful, and peaceful individual. Many expressed disbelief that someone so considerate would resort to such an act.

A neighbor, Mary Kwamboka, noted that Mogeni was always willing to assist others in need. Despite his challenging circumstances, he maintained a reputation as a loving and polite man.
Mogeni is survived by his wife, an unemployed secondary school teacher, and their two children. His father, Kevin Gisemba, appealed to the county government for support, requesting that the widow be employed to help her care for the children.
The incident highlighted the family’s precarious situation, compounded by economic difficulties.

This incident is not an isolated case, as local leaders and community groups raised alarms over the increasing number of suicides in the region.
They pointed to economic hardships as a significant factor contributing to the mental health struggles faced by many individuals.
The ongoing economic constraints across the country are seen as exacerbating stress, anxiety, and depression, leading some to take drastic measures.
