JSS Crisis as Intern Teachers in Makueni and Nakuru Protest for Fair Salary Compensation

Junior secondary school teachers in Makueni and Nakuru County demonstrated on Monday, May 13, 2024, demanding higher salaries and permanent employment.

These teachers request that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) comply with a recent court order that declared intern teacher jobs unconstitutional.

Three weeks ago, the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC) determined that the commission violated their right to fair labor practices by granting them internship opportunities despite their qualifications and teaching licenses.

Permanent Employment

Justice Byrum Ongaya’s opinion emphasized that the commission’s duty is confined to recruiting only qualified and registered teachers, not student teachers or interns.

Teachers are increasingly demanding permanent and pensionable job conditions. Spokesperson Erastus Mawewu, speaking to a crowd in Wote, Makueni County, expressed disappointment at receiving only Ksh17,000 despite their qualifications.

Mawewu emphasized their commitment to their profession by teaching under the new curriculum, which frequently included material they had never learned in university.

Mawewu emphasized that, as patriotic teachers, they had dedicated themselves to their profession, teaching under the new curriculum.

Despite having four years of university study, they often covered material that they never received during their education. He pointed out that they received a mere 17,000 shillings in compensation, despite their qualifications.

He further stated that they had sacrificed their time and efforts for the betterment of their students. However, they felt sidelined by the very government they had voted into power.

Mawewu came to the clear conclusion that they would not return to work until they received fair recognition and treatment.

This demonstration coincides with the resumption of schools for the second term following a lengthy closure due to disastrous floods across the country.

Intern teachers in Narok also had a protest on Monday demanding for permanent employment and salary compensation from the teachers service Commission.
