The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is a public health insurance program established by the Kenyan government to enhance access to affordable and quality healthcare services for citizens.

SHIF Scheme Contribution and Benefit Tariffs

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the registration process, ensuring that all citizens can benefit from SHIF’s numerous advantages.

Understanding the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF)

SHIF is designed to improve healthcare accessibility for Kenyans by pooling resources from members, who contribute regularly to a shared fund that covers medical expenses. This approach reduces the need for out-of-pocket payments at the time of service, making healthcare more equitable and affordable.

SHIF covers a wide range of medical services, including outpatient and inpatient care, maternity services, and emergency treatment. Members have access to healthcare services at accredited facilities, which ensures quality care without financial strain. The program also promotes preventive healthcare, encouraging regular check-ups and early interventions for better overall health outcomes.

Members benefit from not only financial savings but also access to a comprehensive network of healthcare providers, ensuring quality treatment when needed. SHIF emphasizes preventive measures, encouraging regular medical visits to maintain health.

Contribution rates are structured to be affordable and inclusive, with a tiered system based on income levels. For example:

  • Lower-income individuals contribute a minimal monthly fee.
  • Higher-income earners pay slightly higher rates to sustain the fund.

SHIF is open to all Kenyan citizens over 18 years old, including students, employees, self-employed individuals, and retirees. Those not in formal employment can join through voluntary membership.

Eligibility for SHIF

To qualify for SHIF membership, individuals must:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen or legal resident.
  • Be over 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid national ID or passport.

There are two membership categories:

  • Principal Member: The primary account holder, usually the household’s main income earner.
  • Dependents: These include spouses and children listed under the principal member’s account during registration.

Required Documents for Registration

When registering for SHIF, the following documents are necessary:
