KNEC Issues Directive to Teacher Trainees on Electronic Assessment for TTCs
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announced that all the 2024 teacher education course assessments will be conducted electronically through the CBATE portal.
This directive, aimed at enhancing efficiency and embracing technological advancements, marks a significant shift in the assessment process for Diploma Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) across the country.
The circular to all principals of diploma teacher training colleges states that the following teacher education courses will be subject to electronic assessment:
- Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE)
- Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE)
- Upgrade Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (UDPTE)
- Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE)
- Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE)

KNEC urged principals to adequately prepare for the assessments by ensuring the availability of the necessary ICT infrastructure for both school-based assessments (SBA) and summative assessments online, using the KNEC e-assessment portal.
Additionally, all teacher trainees are required to possess laptops meeting specific minimum specifications by April 30, 2024.
These specifications include licensed Windows 10 version 22H2 and above, an integrated webcam, a 256GB SSD, 8GB of memory, and other essential features to facilitate smooth assessment processes.

Principals are also instructed to ensure stable internet connectivity and power supply in their institutions to support the electronic assessment procedures effectively.
Dr. David Njengere, Chief Executive Officer of KNEC, emphasized the importance of adequate preparation for the administration of these assessments, urging institutions and trainees to comply with the provided guidelines.
