List of C Plain Teaching Courses in Kenya
In Kenya, at least a C (plain) is required for a student to enroll in a university and complete a degree course. Nevertheless, the grade qualifies for a diploma course at a university, college, or technical training center.
If you have a C (plain), you can enroll in a Diploma in Education, Early Childhood Development Education, or Special Needs Education. The only disadvantage is that a C (plain) and diploma may not allow you to work as a secondary school teacher in Kenya.

When it comes to enrolling in a teaching course, a C (plain) student has a few options. Here are the programs you can apply for at Kenya’s higher education institutions if you wish to become a primary teacher with a C (plain).
1. A Diploma in Adult Education.
A Diploma in Adult Education is a teaching program that provides students with the information, abilities, and attitudes required for success in adult and continuing education.
If you want to teach or pursue academic and professional opportunities in adult education and community development, this course is for you.
Although the program prepares you to become a teacher in adult education, it also qualifies a student to be a senior staff member of community training centers, to supervise in-service training personnel, and to work with disciplined forces and professionals in a related field.
Most higher education schools require at least a C (plain) at KCSE to be eligible for a Diploma in Adult Education.
2. Diploma in Early Childhood Development Education.
You must complete an educational program in early childhood development to teach in early childhood learning environments.
Thus, the Diploma in Early Childhood Development Education is one of the most effective teaching courses for C students. The program is similar to the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education.
The program teaches you how to effectively engage children in mathematics, literacy, music, and the visual arts. It will also teach you how to interact with young children, meet their needs, and deal with their linguistic obstacles.
A mean grade of C in KCSE is all that is required to qualify for the course. Furthermore, the TSC will only hire diploma students who received a mean grade of C in KCSE and hold an ECDE certificate from KNEC.
3. Diploma in Education (Arts)
The Diploma in Education (Arts) program prepares students to become art teachers in public and private secondary, primary, and post-secondary institutions. Students study all areas of education required for the teaching profession, with a focus on subjects taught in secondary and mid-level colleges.
They will also learn how to plan, develop, and implement educational courses based on their areas of expertise. If you enroll in a Diploma in Education (Arts), you must choose at least two specializations or teaching subjects.
Some disciplines include English, Kiswahili, History, Geography, Business Studies, Math, Christian Religious Education, and Agriculture. The TSC will only hire you if you have an average KCSE grade of C plain, with at least a C plain in English and a D+ (plus) in Mathematics.
4. Diploma in Education (Science)
A Diploma in Education (Science) has the same goals as a Diploma in Education (Arts). The key difference is that students will learn more about science courses. Furthermore, a graduate will have the necessary qualifications to instruct science subjects.
Postsecondary institutions may design, develop, implement, and evaluate curricula.
When enrolling for a Diploma in Education (Science), you must select at least two specializations or teaching subjects. Physics, biology, chemistry, computer studies, home science, and agriculture are among the topics covered.
Most teacher training colleges offer a Diploma in Education with a C. However, the TSC requires at least a C in English and Mathematics at KCSE.
5. Diploma of Primary Teacher Education
A Diploma in Primary Teacher Education is a program designed for students who desire to work as primary school teachers. It prepares students to gain essential practical and academic knowledge of the teaching profession.
The course teaches students how to communicate effectively, create curriculum, and do comprehensive research in child education. Many colleges have varying requirements for students who want to pursue a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education.
You can only apply for the course if you have a C or higher at KCSE, according to General. You must have a C in Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, one Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), and one Humanity topic (History, Geography, or Religious Education).
6. Diploma in Special Needs Education, teaching courses for C plain.
A Diploma in Special Needs Education prepares you to teach special needs students. You will also get a better grasp of the psychology and needs of children with special needs, particularly those who have physical, learning, or mental disabilities.
Depending on the institution, a Diploma in Special Needs Education might be comprehensive or a specialty.
Autism, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, Hearing Impairment, Deafblindness, Intellectual Disabilities, Gifted and Talented, Visual Impairment, Physical Disabilities, and Learning Disabilities are all possible inclusions in the program.
Alternatively, you can earn a diploma in special education or inclusive education. To enroll in the course, you must have a minimum KCSE grade of C plain or above, with at least C- (minus) in English and C- (minus) in Mathematics for science-based courses, or D plain in Mathematics for non-science-based courses.
7. Diploma of Teacher Education
A Diploma in Teacher Education is a program aimed at preparing students to become teachers capable of effectively instructing or training students in high school or tertiary teacher colleges.
It also provides learners with in-depth knowledge of the subject matter as well as the ability to adapt to Kenya’s ever-changing educational system.
The course requires a student to achieve a KCSE mean grade of C (plain). A student must also earn at least a C in two specialized subjects with a plain grade. You can also enroll if you have a KCSE mean grade of C (minus) and a P1 certificate or a certificate in any field from a postsecondary institution.
