KNUT and KUPPET Protest TSC’s Posting of 61 New School Heads in Bomet

Teachers unions in Bomet County have criticized the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to assign 61 new school principals and head teachers to the region.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) have also requested that the TSC postpone their planned handover ceremony immediately.

They contended that the TSC’s action was inappropriate given the lack of verification for the school administrators who have been running those institutions in acting capacities for such a long time.

They were led by executive secretaries Paul Kimeto (Kupprt) and Desmond Langat (Knut), who directed Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) to investigate the problem, which only affects Bomet County.

They interacted with journalists in Bomet County on Monday. Kimeto instructed the Rift-Valley TSC Director to come clean on the situation.

Kimeto wondered why the TSC was still delocalizing teachers despite the policy being removed when the Kenya Kwanza government came in.

The unionists also stated that if the teachers’ commission did not listen, they would take to the streets to protest the posting of new school heads.

He stated that in order to ensure fairness and transparency, they wanted the TSC to produce the list of teachers receiving promotions in Bomet and postings in other areas.

The unionists stated that they had thought the new regional director would work according to the new law, but he had not.

For his part, Langat expressed regret over the posting of teachers from outside the area, fearing it would demoralize local teachers.

Langat emphasized that their teachers are competitive and capable, asserting that their wealth of experience should allow them to grow just like other teachers in the country.

The Knut boss also stated that there was no ‘leadership vacuum’ in these schools, but the incumbent administrators have been running them without issue.
