KNUT Wants KCSE Exam, Academic Calendar Adjusted Due to Prolonged School Closure
Collins Oyuu, chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), has emphasized the need for the Ministry of Education to examine the academic calendar and maybe reschedule the KCSE exams.
According to Collins Oyuu, chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, the ministry will need to reconsider KCSE exam dates and adjust the academic calendar accordingly.
The ministry has yet to provide any instructions for a reviewed calendar.
“The ministry will likely factor in the time lost and try to recover it inside of this year. So we might see KCSE done late into December,” Oyuu said.
This year’s Form Four candidates have had a turbulent academic path, like a roller coaster ride with many uncertainty.
They are facing a big disruption to their school life for the second time as they prepare for the national examination. Schools have been closed in preparation for the KCSE exam, much like they did for the KCPE exam.

Due of the Covid-19 epidemic, schools were closed for eight months in 2020, from March to November, and candidates took their exams in 2021. Education experts expect a delay this year as well.
The recent indefinite closure of schools declared by President William Ruto has raised concerns about the shutdown’s consequences. Four years after the original upheaval created by Covid-19, schools are dealing with uncertainty once again.

Silas Obuhatsa, Chairman of the National Parents Association (NPA), underlined the need of receiving timely updates from the government on school openings and calendar adjustments.
While acknowledging the possible obstacles, he remained hopeful that this year’s interruption would be less severe.
