KNUT Wants P1 Teachers Prioritized in Upcoming TSC Recruitment
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is pushing for P1 teachers to be prioritized in teacher recruitment, expressing concerns that the current focus on Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers has overshadowed them.
Desmond Lang’at, the Executive Secretary of KNUT’s Bomet branch, emphasized the neglect of P1 teachers, a trend he finds alarming.
During a press briefing, Lang’at pointed out that these teachers are well-qualified and better suited to handle primary-level learners due to their age-appropriate teaching skills.
He stressed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should not overlook P1 teachers while hiring new staff, as they are essential for the primary education sector.
“TSC is now focussing on hiring JSS teachers, forgetting P1 tutors. These teachers are well qualified to handle the primary section hence should be given priority,” he said.
Lang’at also suggested the need for retooling JSS teachers to ensure their compatibility with the comprehensive school system, noting that they were initially trained for secondary education.
Commendation for Regional Teachers
Furthermore, Lang’at praised the discipline and hard work of teachers from the region, noting the absence of indiscipline cases in the county recently.

He commended the teachers’ dedication, which he believes reflects positively on the union and the education sector in Bomet.
