KUCCPS to Release Placement Results on Wednesday.

More than 980,000 Form Four leavers who qualified for placement into institutions of higher learning are expected to know the institutions and programmes they have been admitted to on Wednesday, July 8, following the release of the 2026 placement results by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The placement results are expected to be announced by Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba, bringing to an end the placement process for candidates who sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

The placement exercise covers admission to degree, diploma, certificate and artisan programmes offered by public and private universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, and teacher training colleges. Placement has been undertaken based on applicants’ qualifications, programme choices and the declared capacities of participating institutions.

Candidates will be required to access their placement results through the KUCCPS online portal using their KCSE index numbers. The portal will indicate the institution and programme to which each applicant has been placed. Following the release of the placement results, universities and colleges are expected to issue admission letters and joining instructions to successful applicants.

According to data released by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), a total of 268,700 candidates attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination, making them eligible for placement into degree programmes.

Successful applicants admitted to degree programmes are expected to report to universities between August and September, in line with the academic calendars of individual institutions. Admissions to Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions will be conducted according to the reporting schedules issued by respective institutions.

The 2026 placement exercise will accommodate a larger university-bound cohort compared to the previous year. The number of candidates who attained the minimum university entry grade increased by 24,137 compared to the 244,563 candidates who qualified for degree admission in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service declared that there are 322,396 degree programme slots available across 43 public universities and 31 private universities, providing sufficient capacity to accommodate all candidates who attained the minimum university entry qualification.

In addition, Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions declared a total training capacity of 1,132,531 students, while secondary teacher training colleges declared capacity for 2,480 trainees.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service stated:

“As required by the Universities Act, 2012, placement of students into the institutions will be on merit, considering applicants’ listed priorities, KCSE performance and available capacities.”

The release of the placement results comes amid continued concerns regarding financing of higher education following the increase in the number of students qualifying for admission.

Budget estimates for the 2026/2027 Financial Year indicate that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has been allocated KSh56.3 billion against a funding requirement of KSh112.1 billion to support an estimated 1.38 million students, resulting in a financing gap of KSh55.8 billion.

The allocation translates to approximately KSh40,694 per student against an estimated funding requirement of KSh81,020 per beneficiary, leaving an average funding gap of approximately KSh40,327 for each student.

Budget estimates further indicate that the Higher Education Loans Board and the Universities Fund face a combined financing shortfall exceeding KSh72 billion, as the number of students qualifying for university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training admissions continues to increase.

Following the issuance of admission letters by universities and colleges, successful applicants are expected to submit applications for government scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board loans under the prevailing higher education funding framework.
