KUPPET Calls Urgent Meetings Over TSC’s BBF Deductions Halt
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has requested all its branch executive secretaries nationwide to organize meetings with teachers following the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to suspend the deductions of Burial Benevolent Funds (BBF).
On May 21, TSC communicated with KUPPET, signaling the cessation of BBF deductions. In response, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori, in a letter dated May 24, instructed all branch executive secretaries to hold meetings to reaffirm the union’s stance on maintaining these fund contributions.
Misori emphasized that the Annual Delegates Conference on April 3, 2021, had approved the BBF deductions by KUPPET.

He highlighted the need for urgent branch meetings to discuss the issue and report back to the union’s head office with their resolutions.
Misori also noted that the union’s head office had received numerous complaints from branches with active programs relying on BBF contributions.
According to reports, certain KUPPET branch officials filed a court petition challenging the legality of the BBF deductions, prompting the TSC’s directive.
Misori mentioned that the union has presented a defense against this petition. The TSC claims that a petition by five KUPPET branch officials, alleging the deductions were illegal, halted the deductions.

The petition referenced Jentrix Ogola’s payslip and called for the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the TSC’s involvement in these deductions.
TSC concluded by stating that, in light of the union officials’ requests, they would immediately stop all KUPPET BBF deductions as previously communicated.
