KUPPET Pushes for TSC Reinstatement of Burial Benevolent Fund Deductions (BBF)

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to resume deductions for the Burial Benevolent Funds (BBF). These deductions were halted last month by the TSC.

KUPPET’s Memo to TSC

In a memo addressed to TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, dated May 30, 2014, KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori urged the TSC to reconsider its decision to halt the BBF deductions until the union provides further guidance.

“We strong urge you to rescind the decision on the BBF deductions until properly guided by us in the manner set out in our relations,” reads part of the memo.

Misori expressed the union’s concerns about the stoppage and emphasized the need for TSC to wait for proper instructions from KUPPET as stipulated in their mutual relations.

Misori noted that KUPPET is planning to convene a Special Delegates Conference to address the BBF issue comprehensively.

He mentioned that the national officials, who are currently out of the country, will convene the meeting soon.

In the interim, Misori reminded TSC that the resolutions of the 2021 Annual Delegates Conference remain in effect and referenced a previous communication (Ref KUPPET/TSC/015/21, dated May 17, 2021) urging TSC to maintain the existing BBF deductions for all KUPPET members.

TSC’s Suspension of Deductions

On May 21, TSC informed KUPPET that it would halt the BBF deductions due to a court petition by five union branch officials.

These officials challenged the legality of the deductions and called for an investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

As a result, TSC decided to immediately cease all BBF deductions based on KUPPET’s previous letter.

Historically, TSC has deducted funds from teachers’ paychecks to ensure that teachers who pass away receive dignified funerals.

The recent halt in BBF deductions has raised concerns within KUPPET, prompting the union to seek a resolution to maintain the welfare of its members.

KUPPET continues to advocate for the reinstatement of BBF deductions, emphasizing the importance of the fund in supporting bereaved families during difficult times.
