KUPPET Wants Junior Secondary Domiciled in Secondary Schools.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) is urging the government to relocate Junior Secondary School (JSS) to secondary schools rather than primary schools, emphasizing the need to address infrastructure and staffing challenges.
KUPPET argues that the shift will prevent potential disruptions in education due to unpreparedness and inadequate facilities.
Two years after the government introduced JSS, KUPPET officials expressed concerns about its implementation. They cautioned that schools might not meet the required infrastructure standards by January 2025, risking a crisis.

“We know very well that many schools will not have met the timelines of preparing classrooms for grade nine,” said KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori.
KUPPET highlighted that housing JSS within secondary schools would reduce the burden of building new classrooms and laboratories, as secondary schools already possess more robust infrastructure.
The union also raised concerns regarding the age and developmental stages of JSS learners. They pointed out that Grade 9 learners, who are in their adolescence, might face challenges if they are grouped with much younger primary school students.

KUPPET noted that this mix could lead to ethical issues and heightened risks in primary schools, which traditionally host younger children.
