KUPPET Wants TSC to Improve Teachers’ Mental Health Support
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) is urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to improve teachers’ access to counseling services due to increasing mental health concerns.
Kericho branch Executive Secretary, Mary Rotich, expressed worry over the growing mental health issues among teachers and stressed the need for immediate action.
She advocated for the establishment of awareness programs, noting that while mental health is currently covered by Aon Minet, additional efforts are necessary.
During her speech in Kericho town, Rotich highlighted the shortage of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, which she said is adversely affecting the delivery of health services.
She called for the empowerment of Aon Minet-accredited facilities across the country to ensure teachers can access quality services easily.
Causes and Signs of Depression
Rotich pointed out that gambling, family issues, and other challenges are leading to depression among teachers.
She advised that if anyone notices a colleague isolating themselves, they should reach out and offer support.
