Meru School Administration Seeks Probe After 20 Teachers’ Houses and School Facilities Set Ablaze Over ‘politics’
The administration of a school in Meru County is urging swift investigations following a recent fire that reportedly resulted in losses amounting to up to Ksh. 20 million.
The incident occurred at Igoji Primary School, where a part of the school was set ablaze two weeks ago. This event is being described by some members of the administration as politically motivated.
Reverend Lawrence Micheni, the Superintendent of Igoji Primary School, reported that attackers set fire to the school two weeks prior, burning down more than 20 teachers’ houses and destroying the bakery, the Principal’s Office, and several classrooms.
Inside the school, slogans reading “Micheni must go” were written on blackboards by the attackers.
Alleged Motives
Reverend Micheni alleged that certain groups were being manipulated to target the school for political purposes.
He believed this was due to his involvement as a witness in a legal case advocating for the removal of a senior politician in the county.

Micheni expressed concern about the attack and questioned the state of security in the country, emphasizing that the community had previously donated the land to the church for the establishment of a school.
“It is very unfortunate and we are asking ourselves, are we in Kenya. As a church, the community has let us down. The land was given to the church by the community and they wanted us to establish a school, but now there is no security,” Micheni said.
Historical Context
Igoji Primary School was founded in the 1960s to educate underprivileged children and orphans. The Catholic Church built the school on land provided by the Igoji community, intending to serve the local populace.
However, the recent attack has strained the relationship between the school and the community, raising concerns about safety and security.
