Migori County Partners with EIDU to Provide Digital Literacy to ECD Learners.

Migori County has announced a partnership with EIDU, a technology-enhanced platform, to introduce digital learning in half of its Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres.

The initiative is set to benefit learners in 348 centres by 2025, providing them with digital tools to enhance foundational literacy and numeracy.

The Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Sports, and Youths, Rahab Robi, highlighted the advantages of the programme for younger learners.

She explained that integrating digital skills into early education would equip children with the knowledge to shape their intellectual development.

Additionally, the county plans to recruit more ECDE teachers to ensure adequate staffing for effective training.

EIDU aims to revolutionize the county’s education system by integrating high-impact interventions into a user-friendly system accessible to teachers, students, and support staff.

This initiative focuses on foundational learning outcomes to enhance public education systems at the ECDE level.

Gradual Implementation and Programme Funding

Robi indicated that the programme would initially cover 50 percent of ECDE centres, with a gradual rollout planned to reach all learners eventually.

The partnership underscores the importance of quality education in the 21st century and aligns with the county’s goals of enhancing early childhood education.

EIDU official Lilian Avugwi revealed that the project, worth Ksh 41 million, would run for one year with a possible extension. It will provide digital literacy to Pre-Primary Education (PP1 and PP2) learners while supporting teacher training and learner assessments.

Avugwi detailed that the programme includes teacher training, assessment tracking, and collaboration with extension staff from the county’s education department to ensure its success.

Currently active in 23 counties, EIDU was first implemented in Mombasa, which achieved 100 percent digital learning enrollment.

“We will be supporting the Migori programme for one year with a possible extension to ensure that we give a digital platform and literacy to our younger learners”, noted Avugwi.

Migori County Director of Education, Edward Okello, stated that the ICT programme would enable implementers to monitor and evaluate learner progress effectively.

Earlier this year, Migori County received support from LAPFUND, which donated 6,000 chairs and 300 tables to create a conducive learning environment for ECDE learners.

This infrastructure complements the digital learning initiative, ensuring young learners have both the tools and environment for quality education.
