Parents Association Ask Teachers to End Planned Strike

Parents are appealing to teachers to reconsider their planned strike scheduled just before the reopening of schools for the third term next week.

National Parents Association, led by chairperson Silas Obuhatsa, emphasized that a strike would severely disrupt learning, especially with candidates preparing for their final exams.

Obuhatsa expressed that teachers, being parents themselves, should empathize with the struggles students have faced due to recent floods and Gen Z demonstrations.

He urged teacher unions to prioritize the students’ education over issues that could be addressed later.

Parents are also urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure that all teachers resume their duties next week, as they have already been compensated. The concern is that students cannot be left in classrooms without proper instruction.

Unresolved Negotiations

Negotiations between the TSC, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) ended without resolution this week.

The unions expressed disappointment, stating that the TSC failed to meet their demands. In a statement, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu indicated that out of six key demands, only one was addressed by the TSC.

Despite the deadlock, the TSC announced that an agreement was reached regarding the implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The Commission expressed gratitude to the government for securing sufficient resources to support the CBA and other teacher programs, despite the challenging economic conditions.

On Wednesday, the National Treasury allocated nearly Sh30 billion to the Ministry of Education to support various educational initiatives.

The funding breakdown includes Sh1.623 billion for free primary education in the third term, Sh14.145 billion for free day secondary education, and Sh6.109 billion to support Junior Secondary Education.
