Parents Back Plan to Replace Bursaries with Free Education
Some parents in Nakuru have expressed support for the proposal to replace the bursary fund, led by Andrew Kirui.
They believe this move will save time and ensure all students benefit regardless of their backgrounds. Kirui, speaking in Total town, highlighted that politicians were exploiting bursaries for personal gains, leaving many deserving students without support.
The parents urged MPs to back the bill, emphasizing that no child should miss out on education due to lack of fees.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargey echoed the parents’ sentiments, noting the government was spending large amounts of money on education bursaries.
Cherargey pledged to support the bill, stating that replacing bursaries would enhance efficiency and prevent current misappropriations.
He pointed out that the government allocates significant funds for bursaries annually, suggesting these funds should be directly sent to schools.
Cherargey remarked that elected leaders are reluctant to give up the bursary kitty as it serves their political interests.
“Replacing or merging bursaries is good and we support the proposal. Politicians have been using bursaries for their political gains even as needy students are locked out,” Kirui said.
